Pumpkin Patch With a Baby: Tips From Our First Fall Outing
We took Finley to his first pumpkin patch when he was only 2 months old. Honestly? I was a little nervous. A brand new baby, a farm full of people, and an Indiana fall day that couldn’t decide what season it wanted to be-the struggles. ๐
It ended up being one of my favorite days that fall. He napped in the carrier, we soaked up all the pumpkins, and yes, we got the photos (more on that in a minute- we didn’t say they were Pinterest perfect). So if you’re thinking about taking your little one this year, here’s your sign to go. These are the 4 things that actually made our day easier.

Our Pumpkin Patch Day With a 2-Month-Old
We went on a late September morning in Indiana, which means weather could be great or bad, but we were risking it for our nieces and nephews. The farm had a little bit of everything: a corn maze, a hayride out to the pumpkin field, horses, ponies, and even a camel. Finley napped in the carrier for part of it and took in the rest from our arms. Big day for a tiny guy.

Tip 1: Dress Everyone in Layers
Indiana in the fall keeps you guessing. It was chilly when we got there in the morning, and by the afternoon it was HOT. Like, peel-off-your-sweatshirt hot.
Finley is one to get hot, so this one mattered a lot for us. We dressed him in layers we could take off as the day warmed up. He started in long sleeves and was down to a short-sleeve onesie by the end of the day (especially since he was in his “blow out” phase). A quick feel of the back of their neck tells you if they’re getting too warm- nurse tip.
Do the same for yourself. A sweatshirt you can tie around your waist or stuff in the diaper bag is your best friend at the pumpkin patch.

Tip 2: Wear the Baby (and Keep the Stroller in the Car)
We packed the stroller in the car just in case, but we wore Finley in the carrier for most of the day. Pumpkin patches are dirt paths, bumpy fields, hay, and crowds. Not exactly stroller friendly. The last thing you want is to drag a stroller around a field.
Babywearing kept him close and cozy, kept our hands free for pumpkins and our nieces and nephews, and he napped right there on our chest. When we wanted a break at the end of the day, the stroller was ready to go. Best of both. We ended up only needing it for dinner.

Tip 3: Wash Hands Like It’s Your Job (It’s RSV Season)
Pumpkin patch season is also RSV season(NO ONE KISS OR TOUCH THE BABY), and with a 2-month-old, that was always in the back of my mind. So we made sure everyone was washing their hands. Us, our people, and anyone who wanted to touch him. Also, as a parent, you are allowed to say “NO” and “please don’t touch him.” That’s not rude.
This goes double if your patch has farm animals. We loved saying hi to the horses, but wash or sanitize those hands before anyone gets near the baby.
Bring hand sanitizer for the in-between moments, and don’t feel weird asking people to wash up first. No shame in it, okay? Protecting your baby is never rude.

Tip 4: Don’t Stress Over the Perfect Photo
I know. You’ve seen the pictures and pinned them on your Pinterest board.. Baby sitting perfectly in a pile of pumpkins, smiling at the camera, not a single tear. Here’s the truth: we got this instead. That’s okay. Your life doesn’t have to be a perfect Instagram carousel. He hated being sat down on lumpy pumpkins.

And honestly? Fair. I wouldn’t like being sat on pumpkins either. ๐
Take a few quick shots, then let it go. Some of my favorite photos from the day are the real ones: the snuggles, the carrier naps, and yes, the grumpy little face. I was also 2 months postpartum, so I have to remind myself, this was a lot for me. Those are the ones I’ll love looking back on. Need the words to go with your photos? I rounded up 50 fall Instagram captions for your pumpkin patch posts.
